The Sunday Times (5th April 09) reports that Home Secretary Jacqui Smith is to announce a deal with DIY stores B&Q and Focus to provide discount vouchers to make their homes more secure as burglary figures are set to show a further increase.
The vouchers giving a 10% discount against the purchase of locks and alarms are to be introduced following figures released earlier this year which showed a rise of 4% in household burglaries between July and September 2008 compared with the same period in 2007. In actual figures there were some 69700 burglaries recorded over that yearly quarter or 1 burglary every 2 minutes in England and Wales!
Many Police areas showed a much higher rise than the quoted 4% average and it is obvious that the Home Secretary is preparing to pledge further money to an area that personally affects us all, be it through the unfortunate position of becoming such a victim of crime or through the increases we will see through our insurance policies.
